Setting: wife visiting husband in hospital, perhaps for the last time
Jane: Ted, I don't know what we have done wrong, but it seems like we just get one bad thing after another. I don't think it's fair, since we have lived faithful lives.
Ted: And there were so many things we didn't get to do. I didn't get to take you to Hawaii or even Europe. This is certainly not what I had hoped for our retirement.
Jane: Well, we don't get everything we want, but we do get to choose how we respond to what life throws at us.
Ted: Yes, and now I wonder if I have even the few weeks left that the doctor guessed. It is just a guess, you know.
Jane: Whatever time we have left together is a gift. We just need to make the most of each day.
Ted: I have always paid the bills. Do you know where I keep the checkbook and all the IDs and passwords?
Jane: I think I know, but I would like you to tell me so I can start doing that. And tell me also where you will is, and what you want for your memorial service.
Ted: We will get to that, but right now I just want to hold your hand and talk with you. We never know when this might be the last time we can do this.
Questions:
Are Jane and Ted facing the issues, or dodging them?
What is the triage level? (1=life at risk; 2=property damage; 3=just concern)
If you were to visit in this hospital room, what would you say to them?
What do you think Jesus would say to Ted? To Jane?
